Graduate Degree Programs in Art
The Department of Art and Art History offers two distinct graduate degree tracks, the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) and the Masters of Arts (M.A.). Both degrees offer distinctly different programs of study and students should download and carefully read over the current M.F.A. and M.A. application packets for complete details and guidelines.
The MFA is a terminal degree in art requiring a minimum of 70 hours of study at the graduate level. The MA in Art can be focused on either art history or studio art and requires a minimum of 36 hours of graduate study. Prospective art graduate students should contact the graduate art advisor after reading over the application packet should additional information or clairification be needed regarding graduate policies or application proceedures.

MFA Mission Statement
The Master of Fine Arts degree program provides the means for graduate students to develop as contemporary artists in all aspects of the discipline.  Through directed studies of an individualized nature, students discover their own historical context, master technical skills required, mature aesthetic interests, and develop professional practices and the capacity to create sophisticated visual and conceptual statements.   Courses of study include extensive critical analysis, research into contemporary art theory, innovative problem solving, aesthetics, and an exploration of the artist’s role and interface with contemporary society.  The MFA program aspires to provide the context in which students coalesce the abovementioned elements into a holistic philosophical, aesthetic, and practical understanding of the discipline.
