The Department of Art and Art History is part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at UT
Tyler. Programs of study are offered for students pursuing careers in
art as well as those seeking to complement other areas of study with expanded
knowledge and ability in visual art through a minor in art. Degrees offered
are:
B.F.A.: The
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program offers students an opportunity to
concentration in two-dimensional studio art, three-dimensional studio
art, art history or general studio art. Students wishing to obtain an
all-level teaching certification may do so with the B.F.A. Degree which
will certify one to teach K-12 in the state of Texas. This degree
program emphasizes sustained and concentrated creative work in studio
art and art history.
B.A.: The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered as a preparatory degree for graduate study in art history. The two most significant differences between the B.A. in Art and the B.F.A. in Art is the 12-hour foreign language requirement for the B.A. in Art as well as fewer studio art hours. Students should consult their art advisor if considering the B.A. in Art degree.
Art Minor: Art may be chosen as a minor to satisfy bachelor degree requirements in
other fields. For a minor in art, 18 hours in art are required, nine of
which must be advanced upper level art courses. Courses are selected in
consultation with an art advisor.
M.F.A.: The Master of Fine Arts in Art degree is offered for students wanting
concentrated graduate studies in studio art. Graduate students pursuing
this degree may select a two-dimensional or three-dimensional concentration. Application deadlines are flexible and prospective students should contact
the Department of Art for an information packet containing complete MFA
guidelines and program description.
M.A.: The objective of the M.A. in Art is to offer individuals the tools to develop skills, knowledge, aesthetic appreciation and critical skills in art. The curriculum provides students the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding in an area of studio art or art history within a traditional Master’s of Arts program.
M.A.I.S.: The Department of Art and Art History no longer participates in the M.A.I.S. degree program.
The M.A. in Art has replaced the M.A.I.S. for the Department of Art and Art History.
M.A.T.: The Master of Arts in Teaching is no longer offered.
