Bill Griffith - Artist Statement

The work has been fired in woodburning kilns for 24-72 hours. The Dwelling forms take reference from ancient architecture including Japanese Haniwa, African adobe huts and Southwest Native American Anasazi cliff dwellings. The surfaces, colors and marks on these pieces are the results of flames striking the work, natural ash deposits melting on the surfaces, or from stacking or wadding pieces on top of other forms. As a full time administrator, for me studio time is precious. Time spent in the studio becomes a contemplative haven. The quietness of the studio time perhaps is reflected in the work itself.
