Jan McKeachie-Johnston - Artist Statement

Years of living with, studying, and probably most importantly, using, pots of the Leach/Hamada tradition have instilled in me a tremendous love and respects for this avenue of expression in clay. I would like to think that my work fits into this aesthetic. It is both decorative and functional. I am working to convey vitality, spirit, and other intrinsic qualities to the person viewing and using my pottery. I have always been excited by decoration as it relates to form, and more recently my attention has turned to the more sculptural aspects of pots. I believe the continuation and sharing of this tradition in ceramics is important, not only to myself but to our society in general. It is an aesthetic not always easily grasped but having an intangible and lasting value to mankind.
