Michael Simon - Artist Statement

I make cups, bowls, teapots, pitchers, jars and vases. I have attempted to keep my work in a constant state of evolution, though the process of change is admittedly slow and gradual.

A potter's statements are made by suggestion and innuendo. The choices I have made in attempts to attain a more specific expression include the color, texture and density of the clay, the shape, proportion and scale of the pot form, the specific treatment of the surface, and the temperature and atmosphere of the fire. These are my tools, my language. The structuring and proportioning of the pots' form are the areas for which my intuition is triggered; the areas for which I have the deepest feeling. The obvious utility of the pots allows approachability, a welcoming. The patterning is meant to do the same.
