Undergraduate Degree Programs in Art
The Department of Art and Art History offers two distinct degree tracks, the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Both degrees offer several different areas of concentration as well as an all level teacher certification option.
Recommended Degree Plans: The following recommended degree plans are offered only as a general guideline. Since there are several options within both the B.F.A. and B.A. degrees in art, art majors should consult an art advisor.
B.F.A: Bachelor of Fine Arts
B.A.: The Bachelor of Arts in Art
B.F.A.: The
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program offers students an opportunity to
concentration in two-dimensional studio art, three-dimensional studio
art, art history or general studio art. Students wishing to obtain an
all-level teaching certification may do so with the B.F.A. Degree which
will certify one to teach K-12 in the state of Texas. This degree
program emphasizes sustained and concentrated creative work in studio
art and art history.
B.A.: The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered as a preparatory degree for graduate study in art history. The two most significant differences between the B.A. in Art and the B.F.A. in Art is the 12-hour foreign language requirement for the B.A. in Art as well as fewer studio art hours. Students should consult their art advisor if considering the B.A. in Art degree.
Art Minor: Art may be chosen as a minor to satisfy bachelor degree requirements in
other fields. For a minor in art, 18 hours in art are required, nine of
which must be advanced upper level art courses. Courses are selected in
consultation with an art advisor.
All art majors should have a degree plan completed during your first year at UT Tyler. Completion of the degree plan is initiated by completing the degree plan declaration form available in the art office.
Declared art majors are assigned an advisor after the 12th class day each fall and spring semester. Advising assignments will be posted in the Art Studios and at the Cowan Center; students may also contact the art office to find out who there assigned advisor is. The advisor completes the student’s degree plan after the degree plan declaration form is returned.
After your degree plan is completed, a copy will be mailed to you at the address included on the degree plan declaration form.
Advisors complete degree plans during these times:
Fall Semester: September 1st – November 15th
Spring Semester: February 1st-April 15th
Students should make an appointment with their assigned advisor should they have questions about their degree plan or course of study although an appointment is not necessary for the completion of a degree plan.
