Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology

Athletic Training

Total Semester Credit Hours = 120

Description

Kinesiology is the study of movement or exercise. The Bachelor of Science degree program in Kinesiology with Athletic Training option may be used to prepare for the State of Texas Athletic Trainer License Examination. A student wanting to pursue an athletic training license in the state of Texas should consult with an academic advisor early in the program. In addition to the courses listed below, students must complete other state requirements including the successful completion of an 1800-hour apprenticeship under the supervision of licensed and/or certified athletic trainers. This apprenticeship must be coordinated with the UT Tyler Head Athletic Trainer as soon as the student decides to enter the program.  The coursework and apprenticeship must be ongoing at the same time.  One cannot be completed without the other.

Athletic training is practiced by certified athletic trainers.  Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients.  Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

Study of kinesiology requires a passion for exercise, an appreciation of the health and recreational benefits of regular exercise, and a strong desire to educate others about the benefits and proper uses of exercise, and especially lifelong exercise.

Upon acceptance into UT Tyler's Department of Health and Kinesiology BS Kinesiology program, students desiring to pursue the Athletic Training Option must consult with the Head Athletic Trainer.
