Academic Advising
Student and Advisor Responsibilities
Student Responsibilities
Although advisors can help you more fully understand your academic options and help you avoid needless mistakes, it is very important that you come prepared to each and every advising meeting that is scheduled with your academic advisor. To help you prepare for your advising meeting, please read and fully understand your responsibilities below:
- Take the initiative to set up an academic advising meeting at least once a year with your assigned advisor (it is recommended to meet with your advisor each semester prior to open registration).
- Have a trial schedule prepared to share with your academic advisor. Never say, "What classes should I take this semester!!!"
- Prepare a list of questions or concerns before each meeting with your academic advisor so you do not forget them once in the meeting.
- Be familiar with the requirements of the major for which you are pursuing (i.e., prerequisites, sequencing of classes, etc).
- Keep you academic advisor informed about changes in your academic progress, academic/career goals as well as any relevant information that might help you academic advisor with your mentoring.
- Always act in an ethical, accountable, and professional manner.
- Accept responsibility for your own education.
Advisor Responsibilities
Excellent academic advising is an essential ingredient for student success within the Department of Health and Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Tyler. Faculty and professional advisors not only help students with course selection and graduation requirements, but also serve as professional mentors to our students. Therefore, it is important that Academic and Professional Advisors:
- Provide scheduled academic advising time for our students.
- Understand and effectively communicate the curriculum, graduation requirements, and University/College/Departmental policies and procedures.
- Provide students with opportunities to develop their decision-making skills as related to their academic goals, educational plans and achievements.
- Listen to student concerns and respect their individual circumstances and life experiences.
- Work with students to emphasize areas of strength and develop areas of perceived weakness as related to the successful attainment of their academic goals.
- Always act in an ethical, accountable and professional manner.
