The Office of Academic Affairs

At The University of Texas at Tyler, we are creating solutions today for a better tomorrow. A culture of excellence provides a nurturing environment to prepare our students to be future problem solvers. We take great pride in a tradition of offering quality academic programs, expert faculty, dynamic student life, and engaging service opportunities.

The Office of Academic Affairs is composed of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, Associate Vice President for the Office of Sponsored Research, The University Registrar, and the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies.

Also reporting directly to the Provost are the five academic colleges, the Muntz Library, and the Palestine and Longview Campuses.

The role of the Office of Academic Affairs is to ensure that the University's educational mission is carried out by exercising administrative responsibility for planning, implementing, and overseeing academic programs to ensure excellence in our teaching, learning, and research initiatives. The Office of Academic Affairs also provides services and support to ensure that the five academic colleges and other academic administrative units are advancing the mission of the University.

As the chief academic officer for UT Tyler, the Provost is responsible for guiding the university's efforts in academic programming, faculty development, and research. The Provost oversees, and makes recommendations to the President on the recruitment, selection, evaluation, compensation, promotion, termination, and assignments of faculty and other academic personnel. The Provost recommends allocation of resources to the academic units and support departments, and oversees assessment of student academic achievement and institutional effectiveness for the purpose of program improvement. In tandem with the deans and the academic administrative units, the Provost develops programs to improve the quality of teaching and learning, to encourage and support faculty research and creative work, and to promote meaningful service to the region. The Provost also serves as liaison with the offices of The University of Texas System and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board concerning academic issues.
