Advance Your Expertise as a Reading Teacher or Reading Specialist

The ability to read well is essential to success in school and in life. The University of Texas at Tyler’s master of education in reading program develops outstanding reading teachers and reading specialists who will use the latest technology and teaching methodology to give children excellent reading skills.

  • Take evening courses on the UT Tyler campus to complete your master’s in reading.  
        Some courses are also available in summer sessions.
  • Choose from two certifications to match your career goals: reading specialist
       (EC-12) or master reading teacher.

Graduates of the master’s in reading program are employed in these and other locations: Tyler ISD, Arp ISD, Longview ISD, Tyler Junior College, Van ISD and Kilgore ISD.

Master’s in Reading:  Build Skills.  Grow Professionally.

  • Pursue a reading specialist certification to be ready to supervise a reading program or work with teachers to improve reading in a school or district. Earn a master reading teacher certification if your path is to become a better classroom reading teacher or teach on a community college level.
  • Complete the reading master’s program in two years. You’ll do a total of 36
       credit hours of coursework, but no thesis is required.
  • Gain the credentials and skills to build, maintain and evaluate reading programs in a school or at the district level.
  • Meet additional requirements for teaching experience and passing a state exam to earn either a Reading Specialist (EC-12) Certificate or The Master Reading Teacher Certificate, in addition to your graduate degree.

  • Learn from faculty members who have had actual experience in the field as literacy collaborative trainers and classroom teachers.
  • Be mentored by professors who provide individualized support to address your educational goals and school setting.
  • Study with professors who are recognized authorities in the field of education and frequent speakers at professional educational conferences on such topics as: A Look at Teaching through Children’s Literature; Restructuring a High School Reading Program; and Silent Reading Behavior of Secondary Struggling Readers.

Reading Courses:  In-depth Training for the Classroom

Reading and Writing Workshop I – Elementary – Study techniques for implementing a reading/writing workshop in an elementary classroom.

Reading and Writing Workshop II – Secondary – Explore techniques for implementing a reading/writing workshop in an elementary or secondary classroom. Students will be immersed in both reading and writing, and will experience firsthand conferencing, mini lessons, reading aloud, grouping, revising, editing and publishing.

Content Literacy in the Secondary School – Examine the assessment of textbooks, content area reading-study skills, teacher/learner strategies via a content reading lesson, assessment procedures and the development of secondary reading programs.

Career Outlook for Reading Specialists

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment outlook for instructional coordinators, a specialized career area that includes reading specialists, is favorable throughout the decade ending in 2018. Job growth is anticipated to be 23%, which is greater than currently anticipated for most career fields.
