Health Studies Teaching Option BS Degree
Prepare to Teach Health-Related Topics in Schools or in the Workplace
A bachelor of science degree in health studies from The University of Texas at Tyler prepares you for a career in a health-related field. Adding a teaching certification enables you to become a specialized health care educator ready for today’s classrooms or for training opportunities in industrial settings.
- Work with advisors in both the College of Education and Psychology and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences to develop a coordinated academic plan.
- Complete your student teaching and prepare to pass the Texas teaching certification examination.
Health studies graduates have moved into teaching positions at Tyler High School, and at private schools in Tyler and in other Texas communities.

Bachelor’s in Health Studies/Teaching: Intensive Study. Rewarding Field.
- Complete 37 hours of upper-division health studies courses and 24 hours of education courses to achieve superior skills to teach a health-related curriculum.

Health Studies/Teaching Courses: Outcomes-Driven. Student-Centered.
Behavioral Health — Study the effects of various aspects of behavior on health, including effects on disease risks and prognosis in selected disease states, and examine behavioral alternatives in relation to promotion of health of the individual.
Educational Psychology: Adolescent Development and Learning – Explore contemporary theories and principles of development, learning and motivation as they relate to the educational process. Special emphasis will be placed on applications to the adolescent period. Field experience required.
Student Teaching EC-12

This one-semester experience will provide pre-service teachers with an opportunity to demonstrate identified competencies in the classroom. The student works under the cooperative supervision of a public school teacher and a university supervisor.

Career Outlook for Health Studies and Teaching
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 51% of health educators are employed in health care and social assistance and another 23% find positions in government. With an anticipated 18% job growth through 2018, the field is expected to grow more than most occupations.
