International Student Welcome Week FAQ

What is International Student Welcome Week?
Welcome Week is an informative and fun program that provides incoming international students with excellent opportunities to meet people, make new friends, and learn what it takes to be successful at UT Tyler. Students learn about ways to get involved, academic resources, and how to locate things on campus. Students will also receive essential information about how to maintain F-1 non-immigrant status.

When is International Student Welcome Week?
International Student Welcome Week will be held Tuesday, August 14 – Friday, August 17, 2012.

How do I register for International Student Welcome Week activities?
Students must register for orientation going to the Orientation Registration page

Where will I stay during International Welcome Week?
Most international students attending will already have housing arranged, but those who do not can contact one of the hotels listed below for a reduced rate for orientation attendees.

International Student Welcome Week is FREE to all newly admitted international students!

What will I do at International Student Welcome Week?
International Student Welcome Week will:

  • Inform new students of campus policies and procedures,
  • Educate students on maintaining F-1 non-immigrant status,
  • Teach students how to find on-campus jobs,
  • Help with the academic and social transition to UT Tyler,
  • Prepare students to make reasoned and well-informed choices, and foster a sense of community by acclimating international students to the UT Tyler campus and surrounding Tyler community.

Can you give me more information about International Student Welcome Week activities?
There are many activities planned for you to enjoy.

On Campus Early Move In Day - Students who have chosen to live on campus will receive help moving into residence halls from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m..

Wal-Mart - an American multinational retailer corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. Wal-Mart is also the largest grocery retailer in the United States. The company operates under the Wal-Mart name in the United States, including the 50 states and Puerto Rico. It operates in Mexico as Walmex, in the United Kingdom as Asda, in Japan as Seiyu, and in India as Best Price.

Local Banks – Local bank representatives will be available to meet with and assist students with opening bank accounts.

On-Campus Jobs – Students will learn how to search and apply for on-campus jobs. They will also learn how to apply for a social security number.

Tyler Transit Bus Ride to Broadway Square Mall - Tyler Transit, operated by the City of Tyler, provides public transportation services throughout Tyler. Services hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.. 

Broadway Square Mall - With over 60 specialty retailers, the recently renovated Broadway Square Mall is the premier shopping destination in East Texas. Broadway Square serves Tyler and surrounding communities from its convenient location at the junction of Loop 323 and US 69. 

Mandatory International Student Orientation – Students will engage in the following information sessions:

  • Maintaining F-1 Status
  • Academic and Social Transition to UT Tyler
  • Campus Policies and Procedures
  • Making good academic choices

What should I wear to International Student Welcome Week?
Be prepared to travel to different places around our beautiful campus. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for being outside at times. Suggested attire might be sneakers, shorts or loose pants, and a short-sleeved shirt.

Do I need to attend all the International Student Welcome Week activities?
International Student Orientation on Friday, August 17th is mandatory; however, all the other events are optional BUT STRONLY ENCOURAGED. Attending International Student Welcome Week events will introduce you to your community, college, and some of the greatest friendships of your life.
