What classes should I take my first semester?
As a Freshman, you will want to select most of your classes from the University's Core Curriculum. If you have declared a major, then you may also want to take a class from that field.
If you have not decided on a major, then your class selection should be determined by three criteria:
- classes that will fulfill the core requirements
- core classes that will apply to several majors
- exploration of a potential major
Freshmen typically take 12 to 15 hours their first semester. Your choice depends on how involved you plan to be in other activities. The following are some questions you should ask yourself:
- Do I plan to be involved in extracurricular activities such as athletics, Greek life, clubs, etc.? If so, how much time will such activities require?
- Do I plan to work? If so, how many hours per week?
- Do I have other demands on my time that I need to consider? Examples could include: volunteer commitments with church or civic organizations or family obligations.
The following represents a typical first semester:
ENGL 1301
HIST 1301 or 1302
UNIV 1300
MATH (chosen based on test scores and major)
Course in major (or potential major)
Total Hours: 15 hours
