UT Tyler 40th Anniversary
Welcome to The University of Texas at Tyler’s 40th Anniversary—and Still Growing website where you’ll experience a virtual journey reflecting 40 years of growth, transition and excellence in higher education.
Created by the Texas Legislature in 1971 as Tyler State College, the campus was renamed Texas Eastern University in 1975, and became a part of the renowned University of Texas System in 1979. We are deeply indebted to those business and community leaders who, more than 40 years ago, had the foresight and the determination to seek a university for this community and who helped establish a firm foundation for the future. In fact, we have many to thank—40 years of dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, civic and community supporters and elected officials—all committed to the mission of this University.
Today UT Tyler is a four-year comprehensive institution of higher education with regional campuses at Longview and Palestine, and we are still growing. Our society and our world have been changed along the way by phenomenal growth in the technology sector, by greater diversity in our schools and communities and by global economics and issues. UT Tyler continues to address these changes in the way we conduct business, in the way we communicate and in the way we educate our students in the classrooms—traditional and virtual. Our future is bright as we look forward to the next decade and beyond.
Thank you for choosing to browse through our 40th anniversary website and the various links created for this special milestone in the life of UT Tyler. The technology itself serves to remind us of the remarkable changes over the last 40 years. I encourage you to stay connected as we continue to celebrate our 40th anniversary with events through May 2012.
We are UT Tyler—celebrating 40 years and still growing!
