Patriots Open Season With DH Sweep of Hendrix
February 9, 2008
The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team opened their 2008 campaign with two wins on Saturday afternoon against Hendrix College. The Patriots have now won 31 straight home games, dating back to 2006.
In game one, Hendrix scored three runs in the first and two in the second to match the Patriots five-run first inning, but that would be as close as it got as UT Tyler took the 21-6 victory.
Beginning with bottom of the second, UT Tyler outscored the Warriors 16-1. The big play of the game came in the bottom of the second when junior Chris Tucker (Flower Mound, Texas) blasted a three run homer to center field that would put the Patriots up for good.
Senior Brett Holland (Lindale, Texas) got the win on the mound for UT Tyler with eight strikeouts. Holland allowed eight hits.
In game two, it was more of the same as UT Tyler out hit Hendrix, 21 to 8, on their way to the 19-3 win. Junior Chad Daleiden (Cave Creek, Ariz.) hit the Patriots' second homerun of the year, knocking in two runs for UT Tyler.
American Southwest Conference East preseason Pitcher of the Year Ryan Campbell picked up his first win of the year, striking out eight batters and allowing only three runs.
The Patriots open their year at 2-0, while Hendrix falls to 0-6.
Former UT Tyler standout Trent Goree threw out the first pitch in front of the opening day crowd of 725.
The Patriots and Warriors will return to Irwin Field on Sunday for the finale of the three game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
