Baseball Completes Sweep of Schreiner

The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team picked a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Irwin Field by downing Schreiner 10-0 in game 1 and 4-0 in game 2.

In the first game, the Patriots used a seven run fourth inning to power themselves to the shutout win. The highlight of the fourth inning came when sophomore Michael Caggiano (Sugar Land, Texas) pinched hit for a three-run homer. Junior Jeremy Harding (Houston, Texas) also came up big for UT Tyler by going 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Junior Jared Hood (Marshall, Texas) also had a perfect day at the plate as he also went 2-for-2 with one run.

Junior Brett Holland picked up the complete game shutout on the mound for Patriots, allowing just three hits in 23 at bats with nine strikeouts. The win was Holland’s fourth in as many games.

In game two, the Patriots provided less offense but still showcased top-notch pitching, as junior Blake Booher (Hurst, Texas) and junior reliever Beau Ziegler (North Wales, Pa.) combined for the for the shutout. Booher threw seven innings and allowed just three hits and struck out seven batters for the win, while Ziegler put in two innings of work and struck out four batters for the save. The win moved Booher up to 4-0 on the year and gave Ziegler his first save of the season.

Offensively, junior Joe Towns (Carrollton, Texas) and senior Andrew Damewood (Plano, Texas) led the Patriots by each going 2-for-4 with one RBI in the game

On the season, UT Tyler now stands at 11-1, while Schreiner falls to 1-11.

The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Northwood (Texas) for a non-conference afternoon game that will start at 2 p.m.
