Baker, Booher Headline ASC Baseball Selections

RICHARDSON, Texas -- Senior second baseman Clay Baker (Henderson, Texas) and junior starting pitcher Blake Booher (Hurst, Texas) headlined the American Southwest Conference East Division baseball awards on Monday as the duo received Player and Pitcher of the Year honors, respectively.

Baker finished the season batting .401 with 56 runs off of 79 hits with nine doubles, four triples, 17 stolen bases, 10 homeruns and 47 RBIs. Baker had a slugging percentage of .640 and an on base percentage of .449.

Blake Booher set a single-season ASC record for most wins with 11. Booher finished 2008 with an ERA of 2.06 and 84 strikeouts.

On the All-Division teams UT Tyler placed 11 total players, with seven on the First Team, two on the Second Team and one receiving Honorable Mention.

Baker, Booher, third baseman Joe Towns (Carrollton, Texas), catcher Jeremy Harding (Houston, Texas), outfielders Jared Hood (Marshall, Texas) and Andrew Damewood (Plano, Texas) and reliever Beau Ziegler (North Wales, Pa.) were all named to the All-ASC East First Team.

On the ASC East Second Team, the Patriots were represented by shortstop Kendall Fox (Carrollton, Texas) and starting pitcher Brett Holland (Lindale, Texas).

Rounding out the awards for UT Tyler were outfielder Chris Goss (Waco, Texas) and utility player Corey Farra (Lewisville, Texas) who received ASC East Honorable Mention.

The other major East Division awards went to Kyle Pope of ETBU for Newcomer of the Year, Anthony Benoit of Louisiana College for Freshman of the Year and Brian Owens of Mississippi College for Coach of the Year.

The Patriots finished the year at 36-9 and captured the ASC East Championship. UT Tyler finished third in the conference tournament and now waits until Sunday to find out if it received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
