UT Tyler Names Jones Assistant Basketball Coach

Former Tyler Robert E. Lee High School head basketball coach Larry Jones will serve as assistant coach for The University of Texas at Tyler men’s basketball program, head coach Matt Wallis has announced.

Jones served as head coach at Tyler Lee for 21 years before retiring in February. In 28 years as a head coach, Jones amassed a 541-313 overall record.

“We are extremely excited to have Coach Jones be a part of our program,” said Wallis. “He is respected across the state and his experience and knowledge will have an immediate impact on our program.”

According to Wallis, Jones will have responsibilities in all areas of the men’s basketball program, including recruiting and practice management as well as game-day coaching responsibilities.

During his tenure at Lee, Jones’ teams were known for being fundamentally sound and well-prepared.

“Coach Jones is consummate teacher of the game and he will be a key component of what we are trying to accomplish at UT Tyler,” said Wallis.

The Patriots open their season Nov. 19 against Southern Methodist University, which is Jones’ alma mater. In 2003-2004, the men’s team finished the season 8-17 overall and 6-8 in the American Southwest Conference.
