Matthew Wallis
Serving as the first head basketball coach in school history,
Matt Wallis came to UT Tyler with a significant amount of coaching
experience at all levels.
Before spending
the 2002-2003 season recruiting at UT Tyler, Wallis served as
first assistant coach for the NCAA
D-I Montana State University
women's basketball program in 2001-2002 – helping MSU to
a Big Sky Conference title that season. He also was assistant coach
at Division II Texas Wesleyan University in 2000-2001.
In 2004-2005, UT Tyler finished in second place in the American Southwest Conference with a 13-9 conference record. The Patriots were 13-12 on the season.
In the program's first year, 2003-2004, Wallis's Patriots were 8-17 overall and 6-8 in the ASC.
"Matt Wallis is a first-class individual with an outstanding
mixture of NCAA basketball experience at the D-I, D-II and D-III
levels. He played for one of the finest small college coaches in
the country, the late Dr. Bob Mason. Matt was a highly successful
D-III player at Austin College and he knows how to be successful
at that level," said UT Tyler
athletics director Dr. Howard Patterson.
Wallis served one year as assistant coach at Austin
College before landing his first head coaching position at Class
2A Tom Bean High
School located north of Dallas near Sherman. Wallis led the Tomcats
to a bi-district championship in 2000, the team’s first post-season
win in 11 years.
At Austin College, Wallis led the Kangaroos to conference championships
as both a player and a coach.
He holds a master's degree in kinesiology from
Texas A&M-Commerce
and a bachelor's degree from Austin College.
