WACO - The University of Texas at Tyler men's cross country team took fifth place at the Baylor Twilight Invitational Friday night, while the Patriots women finished in ninth place to open their season.
Led by a 16th place finish from R.J. Cowan (19:07), UT Tyler finished ahead of TCU, University of Houston, and Dallas Baptist in the 6K meet. Cowan's time set a new UT Tyler 6K record.
"On the men's side, we competed against five of the top seven Division I teams in the Southeast Region, so I was pleased with our performance," said head coach Bob Hepler. "Two of our top runners were also sick, so we could have done even better. I think this this was a good meet to start the season with because we were able to gauge how we stand up against some of the top NCAA Division I teams."
Lamar won the event with an average time of 18:42, followed by Texas, Texas A&M, and Baylor.
UT Tyler averaged 19:39, just behind Baylor's 19:17. Francis Kasagule of Lamar was the top men's finisher with a time of 17:59.
Baylor won the women's race with a average time of 13:46 for the 4K run. UT Tyler's average time of 17:44 put the Patriots in ninth place, behind Baylor, Texas A&M, Lamar, SMU, TCU, University of Houston, Dallas Baptist, and Texas Lutheran.
