Cowan Named ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete
December 7, 2007
RICHARDSON, Texas --- Junior R. J. Cowan (Tyler, Texas) was named as the 2007 Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for men’s Cross Country by American Southwest Conference sports information directors on Thursday. Cowan, a Health and Kinesiology major, was one of six student-athletes to receive the inaugural award.
The award adds to what has already been an amazing year for Cowan. Cowan won both the Rhodes Invitational and the NCAA South/Southeast Regional in 2007 and competed in this year’s NCAA Division III Men’s Cross County National Championships. He has already received All-ASC and All-Region honors and was named South/Southeast Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. On top of his athletic achievements, Cowan currently holds a 4.0 grade point average. For his effort in the classroom, Cowan was named to the 2007 ASC Academic All-Conference team last month.
Four other University of Texas at Tyler student athletes were named to the 2007 Distinguished Scholar-Athlete teams for their respective sports. The four honorees below were also named to their sport's Academic All-Conference team in November.
