Patriots Top DIII Team at Arkansas' Chile Pepper Festival

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The UT Tyler men’s cross country team was the top Division III squad at the University of Arkansas’ 18th Chile Pepper Festival Saturday at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark.
Overall, the Patriots placed 15th with 443 points, just behind California-Irvine with 442. Vanderbilt was behind UT Tyler in the 40-team field.
Host Arkansas, ranked ninth in NCAA Division I, won the meet, followed by Abilene Christian, Virginia Tech, and Rend Lake. Texas A&M rounded out the men’s top five.
Ben Donnan was UT Tyler’s top finisher, running the 10K in 31:58 for 51st Place. Corey Kellam was 65th at 32:17 and R.J. Cowan was 68th at 32:19, giving the Patriots three runners in the top 100.
Also running for UT Tyler were Chauncey Deller, Warren Brown, Bojan Kajtaz, Ross Renfro, Kirk Hesse, Clay Freeman, David Kelly, and Stephan Taylor.
Over 250 runners competed in what is regarded as one of the top cross country events in the nation. Other teams competing included LSU, Auburn, Texas Tech and Baylor.
On the women’s side, UT Tyler played 41st as a team. Sarah Hankla finished with a team-leading time of 25:33, followed by Heidi Stevens at 26:18.
Jessica Beers, Rachel Carroll, Claudia Cardenas, Brittany Moore, and Kim Seliga also ran for the Patriots.
Texas Tech won the women’s race.
This weekend’s races were the final tune-up for the Patriots before the American Southwest Conference meet set for Oct. 27 in Abilene.
