Track Takes 3rd, 5th at ASC Championships

ABILENE, Texas --The Inaugural University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s track teams took third and fifth places, respectively, in the 2008 American Southwest Conference Track & Field Championships on Saturday at McMurry’s Wilford Moore Stadium in Abilene.

The highlight for the women came in the 10,000 meter run as freshman Sarah Hankla (Tyler, Texas) missed the podium by just seconds to come in fourth in the event.

On the men’s side, junior Bojan Kajtaz (Kakanj, Bosnia) was just five hundredths of a second from third place in the 800 meter run.

Junior Warren Brown (Lindale, Texas) won both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter events, while teammate R.J. Cowan (Whitehouse, Texas) finished second in both events. Senior Chauncey Deller (Gladewater, Texas) finished third in the 10,000 to complete the podium sweep for the Patriots.

Dellar would also finish third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

The UT Tyler men’s 4x100 team of freshmen Marc Vestal, Zach Costlow (Mabank, Texas), Paul Metzner (Whitehouse, Texas) and senior Marc Randle (Edgewood, Texas) finished third in the event.

The other men’s relay team of senior Michael Colvin (Jacksonville, Texas), junior Ben Donnan (Paris, Texas), sophomore Brendan Bierman (Cedar Hill, Texas), freshman Corey Daniel (Deer Park, Texas) placed third in the 4x400 relay.

Marc Randle came in second in the Triple Jump preliminaries, but came up short in the finals and finished fourth.

McMurry’s men won the meet for the 10th straight year, while the McMurry women won the title for the third consecutive time.
