Cowan Named Academic All-District by CoSIDA

NOTRE DAME, Ind., – The College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine named R. J. Cowan of The University of Texas at Tyler to their 2008 Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field Academic All-District team on Thursday.
The junior from Whitehouse, Texas had an outstanding year in both sports during the 2007-2008 season. Cowan won the Rhodes Invitational and the NCAA South/Southeast Regional in cross country and finished as the runner-up in the American Southwest Conference Cross Country Championships and the 5K and 10K events at the ASC Track & Field Championships. Additionally, Cowan set the UT Tyler school record in the 8K in 2007.
The CoSIDA award is the latest of many awards that Cowan received for his performance in 2007-2008. For his athletic performance, Cowan was named First Team All-ASC in Cross Country and Track & Field, Cross Country All-Region, USTFCCCA S/SE Region Male Athlete of the Year and UT Tyler Male Athlete of the Year.
For his academic performance Cowan, who has a 3.81 cumulative GPA, was named ASC All-Academic in both sports, the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for both sports, USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic, UT Tyler Student-Athlete of the Year and ASC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for UT Tyler.
Cowan is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which are announced on June 23 by CoSIDA.
