Cross Country Teams Finish in Top 3 at State Championships

SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler women’s and men’s cross country teams finished in second and third places, respectively, at Saturday’s Division III Texas State Championships hosted by Texas Lutheran in Seguin.
In the men’s race, the Patriots recorded 71 points to finish in third place behind race winners Trinity (Tex.) and runners-up Southwestern (Tex.). UT Tyler also recorded the highest finish of any of the five American Southwest Conference schools in the meet.
Sophomore Jeff Chandler (Longview, Texas) led the Patriots in the race by finishing in fourth place with a time of 27:24.
In the women’s race, UT Tyler finished in second place with 65 points, just 22 points behind team champion McMurry.
Freshman Jessica Waninger (Tyler, Texas) finished the race in fifth place to lead her team with a time of 25:30.
Both teams will now take a week off before returning to action on Oct. 10 in Clinton, Miss., at the Mississippi College/Watson Ford Invitational.
