UT Tyler Announces Fall Sports Schedules
August 13, 2008

The University of Texas at Tyler athletics department has announced the 2008 schedules for men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, and cross country.

The cross country teams are the first to get started, running in the Baylor Bear Invitational on Aug. 29. The men’s cross country team returns the core of a 2007 team that has won three straight American Southwest Conference championships and finished third at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Meet.

UT Tyler’s women’s runners took third place in the ASC last season and finished in the top five in four meets.

After the Baylor meet, the Patriots will host the UT Tyler Invitational on Sept. 6 before traveling to Monroe, La., for the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawk Invitational and returning to Texas on Sept. 27 for the Texas Division III State Championships in Abilene. On Oct. 4, UT Tyler will run in the Division III Pre-National Meet in Hanover, Ind., and the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival follows on Oct. 18 in Fayetteville, Ark. The ASC Championship Meet is set for Nov. 1 in Seguin, Texas.

For the volleyball team, the 29-game schedule starts Aug. 30-31 at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tenn., where the Patriots will take on Randolph, Concordia, Piedmont, and St. Catherine. UT Tyler’s first home match is part of the UT Tyler/Azalea Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Invitational set for Sept. 5-6 at the Herrington Patriot Center. The Patriots will play Ottawa and Loyola on Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. On Sept. 6, UT Tyler will meet Rhodes and Bacone.

The conference schedule for the Patriots starts Sept. 16 when ASC East rival UT Dallas comes to the Herrington Patriot Center for a 7 p.m. match. In October, the Patriots will play in two ASC Crossover Tournaments at Texas Lutheran (Oct. 3-4) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (Oct. 17-18).

The ASC Volleyball Championship Tournament is set for Nov. 7-9 at the West Division highest seed. Last year, UT Tyler struggled to a 7-26 (2-15 ASC) finish.

The UT Tyler women’s soccer team, coming off a 13-4-3 season which saw the Patriots advance to the championship game of the ASC tournament in their first-ever postseason appearance, kicks off with a pair of road games on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 in Shreveport, La., where the Patriots will meet Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma City.

The Patriots’ first home game is Sept. 5 when perennial power Trinity (Tex.) comes to Tyler for a 7 p.m. contest, then follows another tough home matchup against Southwestern on Sept. 7 at Noon.

A Sept. 18 road game at Mississippi College will begin the 13-game conference schedule, with the first home conference game on Sept. 25 against Hardin-Simmons, a rematch of last year’s ASC championship.

The ASC women’s soccer tournament is Nov. 7-9 at a site to be determined.

The men’s soccer squad will also face a tough non-conference schedule, opening the regular season with Southwestern on Aug. 29 and Trinity (Tex.) on Aug. 30. Both games will be played in Georgetown, Texas.

Fans in Tyler will get their first look at the Patriots on Sept. 11 in the home opener against Harding, set for 5 p.m. at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

Like the women, the UT Tyler men begin their ASC schedule at Mississippi College on Sept. 18 and Louisiana College on Sept. 20. The conference tournament is Nov. 7-9.

In all, the men will play 16 regular season games. Last year’s team advanced to the semifinals of the ASC tournament and finished with a 12-6-1 mark.

Complete schedules for all teams can be found online at http://www.uttyler.edu/athletics. Admission to all home volleyball matches is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Soccer and cross country events offer free admission.
