Patriots to Start New Season This Weekend

The University of Texas at Tyler athletic department will begin its 2009-2010 campaign during the upcoming holiday weekend, when all five fall sports officially open their regular seasons

The 2009 UT Tyler/Trinity Mother France Volleyball Classic will kick-off the weekend when the two-day, nine-team tournament opens play at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Herrington Patriot Center. The Patriots will play their first game of the tournament later that day when they take on Southern Nazarene at 1 p.m.

UT Tyler will close out play on Friday with St. Gregory’s at 7 p.m., and then return to the Herrington Patriot Center on Saturday to take on Southwestern Assemblies and Mid-America Christian at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

Both cross country teams will also be in action this weekend as they host their lone home meet of the season on Saturday. The women’s 5K race will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by a men’s 8K at 8:00 a.m. Other teams scheduled to compete in the event are Southwestern (Tex.), Northwood (Tex.), LeTourneau, East Texas Baptist, Lon Morris and Dallas.

Finally, both UT Tyler soccer teams also take to the pitch for the first time this weekend with the women open their season at home and the men hitting to the highway to begin a four-game season-opening road trip.

The women will officially open the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex for the 2009 season on Friday when they host Oklahoma Christian at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Patriots will continue play at the Perkins Soccer Complex by hosting LSU-Shreveport at 6 p.m.

The men also begin their season on Friday by traveling to Georgetown, Texas to meet Southwestern (Tex.) in at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the men resume play at Southwestern when they face 5th-ranked Trinity (Tex.) at 3 p.m.
