King CampbellIn his position as head golf coach for The University of Texas at Tyler, King Campbell brings his student-athletes a wealth of personal experience gained as a teacher, a golf coach, and a successful businessman.

Campbell, hired in 2005, is the first-ever full-time golf coach for The University of Texas at Tyler in their athletic expansion.

In the first half of the 2006-2007 season, Campbell's men's team finished in the top four of all four tournaments they entered, with Dean Rodgers winning the Tyler Junior College Invitational.

The Patriots finished second in Seguin by only five strokes to nationally ranked Tyler Junior College, beating the rest of the twelve-team field by six strokes. UT Tyler also came in second in an eighteen-team field at Mary Hardin-Baylor, missing the top spot by only three strokes.

In the second half of the season, UT Tyler’s men’s team finished strong with wins at Hendrix College and LeTourneau, and several finishes where they beat other ASC teams soundly.

Over the season, the Patriots beat eventual ASC champion Texas Lutheran in three of the five tournaments they both competed in. Nationally ranked TLU was the only ASC team to finish ahead of UT Tyler in any tournament in the spring.

The Patriots finished with three individual wins on the year, and in the final six tournaments UT Tyler’s top finisher was unbeaten by anyone from the ASC. Two wins were by Dean Rodgers (SR/Lake Jackson, TX), and Coy Beck (FR/Canyon Lake, TX) added a win and a second-place finish.

In Campbell's first season as coach of the Patriots, his men's team captured two tournament wins. The team won their first tournament by dominating the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational in Seguin, Texas. The Patriots 54-hole score of 858 was ten strokes better than the second place finisher, and earned them the win over thirteen teams including the rest of the American Southwest Conference. Sophomore Drew Johnson finished second overall with a score of 211. Johnson, junior David Thompson, and freshman Scott Englebert all made the all-tournament team.

The Patriots also won the LeTourneau Spring Classic with a 54- hole score of 892, again winning the meet by a wide margin, twenty-four strokes. King's team placed two of the top three scores, with Thompsonfinishing second and sophomore Will Orr ending in third place. Engelbert and Larry McDougal also finished in the top ten.

UT Tyler staged a strong finish in the Mary Hardin-Baylor Spring Invitational. After ending the first round in eight place, the Patriots rallied into a second-place tie at the end of the 36-hole tournament. Orr tied for first in the tournament and was named the ASC Men's Golfer Of the Week. Thompson and McDougal finished in a tie for fifth, both making the all-tournament team.

At the conference tournament, the men's team finished fourth, with Thompson and Englebert receiving All-Conference honors.

Cynthia Sciba, competing as a medalist in the women's tournaments finished second in the LeTourneau Spring Classic and finished eighth in the conference tournament to earn All Conference honors. In addition, Will Orr and Cynthia Sciba earned Academic All Conference honors for 2006.

Before coming to UT Tyler, Campbell was at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, where he served as head golf coach and also taught business law. Under his direction, the Bearcats were ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation and won several tournaments, including the McLennan Coca-Cola Classic Tournament and the Tyler Junior College Fall Invitational. Both his men's and women's teams qualified for the National Tournament in 2004.

Campbell restarted his coaching career after spending twenty years with Bank of America in Tyler as a senior vice president and private client manager. Prior to that, he was an instructor in the business department at San Jacinto Junior College.

Campbell holds a BBA in accounting and an MBA from Lamar University, where he also played basketball. While in graduate school at Lamar, he coached the freshmen basketball team and his teams hold the record for most wins in school history. Campbell also played basketball for Stephen F. Austin State University.
