Men’s Golf 13 Back at ASC Tournament

ANNA, Texas -- After two of three rounds of play, the University of Texas at Tyler men’s golf team sits in third place in the 2008 American Southwest Conference Men’s Golf Championship, 13 strokes behind leader Mary Hardin-Baylor. The two-day tournament is taking place at the Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna.

The Patriots are currently 12 strokes behind first-round leader and current second place team, Texas Lutheran.

In round one, UT Tyler shot a 303 and was just six-strokes off the lead. However, in round two the Patriots shot a 307, falling to 13 strokes back, while remaining in third place.

Freshman Matt Stephens (Mt. Belvieu, Texas) currently leads the Patriots with a two round total of 151. Stephens is seventh in the individual standings. Junior Brian Jennings (Bullard, Texas) is just one stroke behind Stephens with a 152.

Freshman Jacob Walsh (Lewisville, Texas), junior Dustin Isabell (Athens, Texas) and freshman Clay Holcomb (Bullard, Texas) all stayed within four stokes of each other shooting a 154, 157 and 158, respectively.

The winner of the tournament will earn the ASC’s automatic qualifier and advance to the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s National Championship on May13 -16 at the Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Ga. The tournament will be co-hosted by Emory University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission.
