Golf Teams Take 3rd in ASC Tournament; Humphrey Wins Individual Title

ANNA, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s golf teams finished third in their respective tournaments in the 2008 American Southwest Conference Golf Championships on Tuesday afternoon at the Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna.
In individual play, freshman Samantha Humphrey (Flower Mound, Texas) won the ASC Women’s Individual Championship by shooting a 75 and 83 for a two-day total of 158. Humphrey beat out her nearest opponent, Surraya Minhas of Schreiner, by four strokes.
The Patriot women shot a 353 on the day to drop to third place, falling past Mary Hardin-Baylor. McMurry won the tournament with a 670, finishing nine strokes in front of UMHB.
Freshman Jordan Woodruff (Gladewater, Texas) and sophomore Amber Grounds (Whitesboro, Texas) were next in line for UT Tyler as each scored 177 to tie in 18th place. Freshman Katie Harris (Salado, Texas) and sophomore Courtney Kruppa (New Braunfels, Texas) rounded out the card for the Patriots with a 182 and 183, respectively.
On the men’s side, the Patriots fired off their best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 299. However, Mary-Hardin Baylor would continue to stay hot, shooting a 288 in the final round, carrying the Cru to the title.
Junior Brian Jennings (Bullard, Texas) and freshman Matt Stephens (Mt. Belvieu, Texas) were out in front for UT Tyler, as both shot a 225 and finished in seventh place. Freshman Jacob Walsh (Lewisville, Texas) finished just three strokes behind his teammates with a 228 in 10th place. Finishing fourth on the cards for UT Tyler was freshman Clay Holcomb (New Braunfels, Texas) with a 236. Junior Dustin Isabell (Athens, Texas) finished his tournament just two strokes behind Holcomb with a 238 to round out the Patriots’ scoring.
After the tournament, the All-Tournament teams were announced and featured four Patriots. Samantha Humphrey was named to the first team for the women, while Brian Jennings, Matt Stephens and Jacob Walsh all received second team honors for the men.
The Patriots end their 2008 season with four team wins for men. Individually, the women picked up two wins on the season, both by Samantha Humphrey, while sophomore Brandon Ellis (Village Mills, Texas) picked up the sole individual win for the men.
