Men’s Golf Finishes Third at Callaway Invitational

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The University of Texas at Tyler men’s golf team finished third at the 2008 Callaway Collegiate Invitational held at the Callaway Gardens Country Club in Pine Mountain, Ga., on Tuesday afternoon.

UT Tyler, which led after the first day of the tournament, finished Tuesday with a two-day total of 609, 12 strokes behind winners, second-ranked Methodist University. The third place finish was enough to put the fourth-ranked Patriots ahead of three Top 10 teams, No. 1 Oglethorpe, No. 3 and host Huntingdon, and No. 8 Rhodes.

Individually, Brian Jennings barely missed winning the tournament, losing a playoff to Methodist’s Matt Bova. Jennings’ forced the playoff by shooting a 71 on the last day of the tournament, three strokes better than his score on Monday.

Dustin Isabell finished second for the Patriots and 11th overall shooting a 152, just seven strokes behind his teammate Jennings. Matt Stephens and Jacob Walsh tied each other for 32nd place, both shooting a 156. Coy Beck rounded out the scoring for UT Tyler with a 162 in 60th place.

The Patriots will now take 12 days off before traveling to Lompoc, Calif., to take part in the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Invitational held at La Purisma Gold Course, March 16-18. The hosts, Cal Lutheran, also competed in the Callaway Invitational, finishing 12th in the 16 team field.
