Men’s Golf Get 3rd at Tough West Region Invitational

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The 9th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler golf team finished third amidst a highly competitive 14-team field at the 2009 West Region Invitational at the Teravista Golf Club in Round Rock on Tuesday. The two-day, three-round tournament was hosted by Southwestern (Tex.).

Of the 14 teams in the tournament, 11 are currently rated in the Top 30 amongst all Division III teams by Golfstat, while eight of the same 11 teams were also ranked in the latest GolfWorld/NIKE Golf Top 25 Coaches poll.

The Patriots finished the Invitational with a three round score of 912, just eight strokes behind the second place team, No. 9 Redlands and 15 strokes back from tournament winners, No. 2 LaVerne.

UT Tyler recorded victories in the tournament over two top 10 teams, No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 7 Guilford, as well as American Southwest Conference foes No. 13 Texas Lutheran, No. 19 Mary Hardin-Baylor and No. 21 Texas-Dallas.

On Monday, UT Tyler fired a first round total of 306 to put them in second place, but the Patriots shot a 311 in the second round to finish third after the first day of play.

On Tuesday, playing conditions improved and UT Tyler finished the third round with a score of 295. However, the Patriots were unable to gain any ground on the leaders, as both Redlands and LaVerne also shot a 295 in round three.

Senior Brian Jennings (Bullard, Texas) led the Patriots in the tournament by finishing in ninth place with a three-round score of 226.

On Wednesday, senior Spencer Ellis (Tyler, Texas) shot the low round for the tournament by firing off a five-under-par (67) performance.

UT Tyler will take next week off and before competing in the ASC Championships on April 20 and 21 at the Hurricane Creek Country Club in Anna.
