Golf’s Campbell Named as Palmer Coach Finalist
November 5, 2009
NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Texas at Tyler head golf coach King Campbell was named as one of 15 finalists to coach the United States team at the 2010 Palmer Cup on June 24-26 at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday.
“To be selected as a finalist for this prestigious event is a very humbling honor,” said Campbell. “I think it speaks volumes about our program that I would be considered as a Division III coach to go to a major world golfing event and have the privilege of coaching the best collegiate golfers that the United States has to offer.”
The Palmer Cup, founded in 1997, pits the top eight American collegiate players against the top eight collegiate players from Great Britain & Ireland using a scoring format similar to that of the Ryder Cup. The event is named after legendary American and former collegiate golfer Arnold Palmer.
Heading into the 14th edition of the Cup, the series stands even at six wins for the Americans, six wins for Great Britain & Ireland and one tie.
Campbell has taken both UT Tyler golf programs from humble beginnings to national title contenders in a matter of years. In 2008, the UT Tyler women won the American Southwest Conference Championship and, along with the men, advanced to the National Championship tournament for the first time in only their second year of postseason eligibility. At the National Championships, the men finished in fourth place, while the women finished in 19th. The two teams combined for a total of eight team wins during the 2008-2009 season.
This year, Campbell has continued his tradition of excellence by leading both teams into their winter break on winning notes. The men won their final two tournaments of the fall, while the women won their final event, as well.
