Golf Teams End Fall Season With Sweep at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s golf team each ended their 2009 fall seasons on the right note by winning their respective tournaments at the Schreiner Fall Classic in Kerrville on Tuesday.

The women won their first tournament of the season by firing a 652 to finish 10 strokes ahead of second place Schreiner.

Junior Katie Harris (Salado, Texas) turned in the second best 36-hole performance in school history by carding a 77 on Monday and an 81 on Tuesday for a combined score of 158. Her 77 on Monday ranks second amongst the all-time lowest single-round scores in program history.

Sophomore Jennifer King (Victoria, Texas) ended the tournament in a tie for seventh place with a two-day total of 165, while junior Jordan Woodruff (Gladewater, Texas) and freshman Meaghan Howell (Hallsville, Texas) finished just one stroke behind King with a 166 in ninth place.

In the men’s event, the Patriots finished with a two-day score of 576 to win their second consecutive tournament.

Freshman Joey Rippel (Sugarland, Texas) tied a school record for the lowest single-round on Tuesday by firing a 65 on the way to the first collegiate individual tournament win of his career. Rippel finished the tournament with a combined score of 139.

Senior Brandon Ellis (Village Mills, Texas) finished just one stroke behind Rippel to end the tournament in a tie for second place. Junior Luke Loggins (Tyler, Texas) recorded a 146 to finish in a tie for 11th place, while sophomore Travis Johnson (El Campo, Texas) finished in a tie for 18th place to round out the UT Tyler scorecard with a 151.

Both teams will now take some well-deserved time off before resuming their respective 2009-2010 campaigns in February.
