Golf Teams Begin Season With Solid Play
September 15, 2009
The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s golf teams opened their respective 2009-2010 seasons by finishing in third and fourth places, respectively, at the UT Tyler Fall Invitational at The Cascades Club on Tuesday.
The tournament was shortened from two rounds to one due to inclement weather in the Tyler area on Monday.
The men shot a 296 on the day, just two strokes off Paris and Tyler who finished tied for the lead. Tyler was declared as the tournament champions after a scorecard playoff was conducted.
The Patriots were led in the tournament by All-American senior Brandon Ellis who finished in a tie for third place with a 72. Junior Luke Loggins followed two strokes behind Ellis with a 74, while freshman Joey Rippel and junior Lindsey Frank rounded out UT Tyler’s scorecard by each shooting a 75.
In the women’s event, the Patriots shot a 349 to finish in fourth place on the day while Texarkana won the tournament with a 322.
Junior Katie Harris shot the low round of the day for UT Tyler and finished in a tie for 10th place with an 86. Freshman Meaghan Howell and sophomore Callie Rice followed closely behind Harris with an 87, while junior Jordan Woodruff closed out the scoring for the Patriots with an 89.
The men will return to action next week on Sept. 20 when they travel to Tunica, Miss., to play in the Rhodes Fall Collegiate Classic, while the women wait until Sept. 28 before returning to the links by competing in Texas-Dallas’ Lady Comet Fall Classic in Richardson.
