January 12, 2008
The University of Texas at Tyler’s men’s basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped in overtime by Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at the Herrington Patriot Center, 74-72.
Hardin-Simmons opened the contest by going on a 13-3 run, only to have UT Tyler answer with a 16-4 run of its own. The game would continue to go back and forth for the rest of the first half, with the Cowboys taking a three-point lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, the Patriots would wrestle the lead away from Hardin-Simmons to lead by as many as 14, but the Cowboys would not go away. Sophomore Steven Luckey (Grand Prairie, Texas) capped off a 20-6 run for Hardin-Simmons when he knocked down a jumper with 52 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, senior Mardochee Jean (Missouri City, Texas) led the way for his team with four points and four rebounds, as Hardin-Simmons escaped the Herrington Patriot Center with the two-point win.
Senior Brandon Weasby (Houston, Texas) came off the bench to lead UT Tyler with 17 points. Junior Anthony Reese (Longview, Texas) followed Weasby with 13 points. Senior Mirada Reed (Cleveland, Texas) and sophomore Josh Twine (Hemphill, Texas) rounded out the Patriots in double figures with 11 points each. Mardochee Jean led the Cowboys with game-highs of 34 points and 11 rebounds.
The loss drops UT Tyler to 6-7 on the season and 5-3 in conference play, while Hardin-Simmons improves to 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the American Southwest Conference.
The Patriots will play the third game of a four game home stand on Thursday night when they host Louisiana College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m
