UT Arlington Too Much for Men’s Basketball
November 25, 2008
ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its 2008-2009 slate by falling to Division I Texas-Arlington, 99-67, on Tuesday night at Texas Hall in Arlington.
The Mavericks came out strong to start the game, but the Patriots were able to cut the lead to just four points midway through the first half.
In the second half, UT Arlington eventually pulled away leading by as many 34 points. The large Maverick lead could be attributed to their defense on UT Tyler senior Anthony Reese (Longview, Texas). Reese scored 17 points in the first stanza, but was held to just 2 points in the second.
Reese went on to lead the Patriots with a game-high 19 points. Senior Marlon Hill (Port Arthur, Texas) followed Reese with 17 points of his own, while netting four assists and three rebounds as well.
Sophomore Michael Johnson (Longview, Texas) rounded out the three Patriots in double figures with 11.
Junior Brandon Long scored 19 points to lead the Mavericks, while senior Marquez Haynes added 17.
The loss drops UT Tyler to 0-4 on the season, while UT Arlington improves to 3-1.
Up next for the Patriots is a two-game road trip to open the American Southwest Conference portion of their schedule. UT Tyler will take on Texas Lutheran at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday in Seguin, and then travel to Kerrville on Monday where they will meet Schreiner at 7:30 p.m.
