November 2, 2007

Box Score

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – UT Tyler scored two second half goals to defeat third-seeded Mary Hardin-Baylor, 2-0, in the quarterfinal round of the American Southwest Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Friday in Clarksville, Ark.

The No. 6 seed Patriots picked up the game-winning goal off the foot of junior midfielder Cole Brittain in the 57th minute. Brittain was aided on the game winner with an assist from junior forward Michael Kendall who headed a serve from Tony Bowles to Brittain.

Kendall added an insurance goal late in the match after settling a pass from Adam McAlpine in font of the net before slipping it past UMHB goalkeeper Jude Austin in the 87th minute.

“The guys came out a little anxious in the first half and just tried to get back on the same page with each other and sort some things out,” said UT Tyler head coach Kenny Jones. “Our forwards did a good gob in the second half, won a lot of balls and kept it in their half of the field to create chances for us.  We stuck to game plan and got the result we wanted.”

The Patriots controlled the pace for most of the contest and limited UMHB to just three total shots.
Senior goalkeeper Geoff Sherman had one save for the Patriots, while Austin recorded six stops for Mary Hardin-Baylor.

UT Tyler posted 13 total shots, including nine on target, while earning five corner kicks. UMHB took three shots, with just one on net and received two kicks from the corner flag.

The Patriots improve to 12-6 overall and will advance to Saturday’s semifinal round against second seeded UT Dallas at 2 p.m. UTD scored a 2-0 victory over UT Tyler when the two squads met Sept. 16 in Richardson.
