Men’s Soccer Goes 1-1 in Abilene, Jones Notches 100th Win
September 29, 2007

The UT Tyler men’s soccer team scored a 5-0 win over McMurry on Friday before suffering a 1-0 loss to Hardin-Simmons on Saturday in American Southwest Conference soccer this weekend.

The Patriots are now 4-5-1 overall and 2-4 in league play.

After being held scoreless for the fist half, the floodgates opened and UT Tyler posted five second-half goals to defeat McMurry in Abilene Friday.

The win had a historic context as it marked the 100th career win for head coach Kenny Jones.

UT Tyler scored three goals in two minutes and 41 seconds to open up the second half and used the momentum to keep McMurry from mounting a comeback.

The Patriots dominated the contest offensively. Even without a goal in the first half, the Patriots out-shot McMurry 8-2 in the first period. In the second half, however, UT Tyler scored five times on 16 shots while McMurry managed just seven shots in the second period.

The Patriots held McMurry to just two shots on the goal for the entire match while Geoff Sherman and Mark Oliphant combined for the shutout at goalie. Adam McAlpine scored in the 50th minute to begin UT Tyler’s second-half explosion. Just one minute and 18 seconds later, Michael Kendal scored on a set up from Cole Brittain and Tony Gullien.

One minute and three seconds later, McAlpine scored his second goal of the game unassisted. Brandon Warren added a goal in the 79th minute and Rudy Galvan scored in the 81st minute for the final goal of the match.

On Saturday, Hardin-Simmons’s Patrick Almond scored a goal in the 38th minute after a scramble in front of the goal to give the Cowboys the 1-0 win.

Hardin-Simmons was forced to mount a great defensive effort to keep the Patriots off the board. UT Tyler out-shot the Cowboys, 12-9, including 9-2 with the wind in the second half.

UT Tyler hosts Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday and Howard Payne on Saturday.
