Men’s Soccer Picked as ASC Champs; Guillen Earns Honor

RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team was picked to repeat as American Southwest Conference champions in the league’s annual preseason poll of head coaches and sports information directors that was released on Wednesday.
In addition to being picked to repeat as champions, senior Tony Guillen (Longview, Texas) was named as the Preseason Offensive Player of Year.
Guillen led the Patriot’s least season with 12 goals and a league-best five game winners. He was also a first-team All-ASC and All-Region selection. Joining Guillen in the preseason honors was Hardin-Simmons’ Chris O’Brien, who took home the defensive award.
In the poll, the Patriots received 381 points and 21 of 28 first-place votes. Texas-Dallas finished 19 points behind UT Tyler in second place, while Hardin-Simmons came in at third.
Ozarks (Ark.) finished the poll in fourth place, while Mississippi College and Texas Lutheran came in at fifth and sixth, respectively, to round out the six playoff spots.
Coming in at seventh was East Texas Baptist followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor, Howard Payne and LeTourneau at numbers eight through ten.
Rounding out the poll was Schriener and Concordia (Tex.) in eleventh and twelfth place and Louisiana College and McMurry in thirteenth and fourteenth place, respectively.
The Patriots will kick-off the campaign to defend their ASC title on Sept. 4 in Georgetown, Texas when they take on Southwestern (Tex.) at 5 p.m.
