Men’s Soccer Picks Up Key Overtime Win at Concordia
October 24, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team continued its quest for one of six American Southwest Conference postseason berths on Saturday by taking down Concordia (Tex.), 2-1, in overtime at the Town & Country Field in Austin.
The Patriots (5-6-3, 5-3-3) were the first on the board in the match when junior Edward Anaya (Hot Springs, Ark.) found senior Tony Guillen (Longview, Texas) who placed the ball just inside the near post to give the Patriots the early 1-0 lead.
The score remained at 1-0 until the 77th minute when the Patriots committed a foul inside the box to give the Tornados (3-10-2, 1-8-2) an opportunity to tie the game. On the ensuing penalty kick, Concordia’s Conor Woolbert made good on the attempt and tied the match with less than 15 minutes to play.
In the final minutes of the regulation neither team was able to score, thus forcing the game into sudden-death overtime.
In the 98th minute, sophomore Justin NeSmith (Wylie, Texas) scored the game-winner off of a pass from Anaya to give UT Tyler the 2-1 victory.
On Sunday, the Patriots will return to the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex to take on St. Thomas (Tex.) for their final home game of the season at 4 p.m.
