Men's Soccer Falls to St. Thomas in Home Finale
October 25, 2009

The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team lost its final home game of the 2009 season, 1-0, to St. Thomas (Tex.) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

Despite being outshot, 16-2, in the match, the Patriot goalkeeping duo of juniors Mark Oliphant (Bedford, Texas) and Bailey Williams (Allen, Texas) kept their team in the contest by turning away a combined five shots on the day.

However, it was the one shot by the Celts’ Rafael Bustos that got by Oliphant with less than two minutes play in the first half that proved to be the difference maker in the game.

UT Tyler continued to search for an equalizer throughout the second half, but the St. Thomas defense clamped down and did not allow the Patriots to take a single shot in the final stanza.

With the loss the Patriots fall to 5-7-3 on the year, while St. Thomas improves to 7-4-2 with the win.

On Thursday, the Patriots will attempt to keep their American Southwest Conference postseason hopes alive when they meet Texas-Dallas in Richardson at 7 p.m.
