Men’s Soccer Continues Playoff Push With Win at UT Dallas
October 29, 2009
RICHARDSON, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team continued its late season surge on Thursday night with a 3-0 American Southwest Conference victory over Texas-Dallas in Richardson.
The Patriots struck first in the game in the 28th minute when senior Tony Guillen (Longview, Texas) found freshman Nick Gonzales (Houston, Texas) who headed the ball past the UT Dallas goalkeeper for the early 1-0 lead.
UT Tyler (6-7-3, 6-3-3) added to its tally less than nine minutes later when sophomore Jake Urbaniak (Ft. Worth, Texas) found the back of the net to extend his team’s lead to two.
In the second half, Guillen helped cap the Patriots’ scoring in the 70th minute when he set up junior Edward Anaya (Hot Springs, Ark.) for UT Tyler’s third goal of the night.
Senior goalkeeper Mark Oliphant (Bedford, Texas) earned the solo shutout in the match by saving all four shots that he faced.
The win over UT Dallas (8-7-3, 5-4-3) keeps the Patriots in the hunt for the final spot in next weekend’s ASC Championship tournament. On Saturday, UT Tyler will attempt to clinch that final spot when they travel to Clarksville, Ark., for a 3 p.m. match-up with Ozarks.
