Men’s Soccer Falls in Weather Shortened Game
September 4, 2009

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team fell in its 2009 debut on Friday night, 1-0, to Southwestern (Tex.) in Georgetown, Texas, in a game that was halted with 16 minutes and 41 seconds remaining due to lightning in the area.

In the first half, neither team gave up any ground as both goalkeepers ended the half with clean sheets. Southwestern (2-0) outshot UT Tyler (0-1) in the half, 6-3, but Patriot goalkeeper Mark Oliphant (Bedford, Texas) came up big for his club with three saves in the stanza.

However, in the second half Southwestern’s Alex Keller took a corner kick in the 65th minute that bounced off the hands of Oliphant straight to Thorp Arandela who knocked in the rebound for what went onto be the deciding goal.

Nine minutes after Arandela’s goal, the game was suspended for lightning and eventually called due to continued activity,

The Patriots will return to action at Southwestern on Saturday, Sept. 5, when they take on No. 5 Trinity (Tex.) at 3 p.m.
