Late Rally Falls Short For Men’s Soccer vs. Trinity
September 5, 2009
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Fifth-ranked Trinity University used an own goal to edge The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
The Tigers took an early lead in the match when Josh Adams scored off of a ball from Nima Naderi in the 14th minute to put his team on top 1-0.
Adams extended Trinity’s lead to 2-0 less than four minutes later with his second goal of the day in the 18th minute.
In the 32nd minute, junior Edward Anaya (Hot Springs, Ark.) helped UT Tyler close the gap by scoring on a pass from junior Brandon Warren (Duncanville, Texas) for his first goal of the season.
At the half the score remained 2-1, leaving UT Tyler (0-2) in striking distance to become the second team to upset Trinity (2-1) in less than a week.
However, less than two minutes into the second half the Patriots knocked in an own goal that went on to be the difference maker in the match.
In the 78th minute, sophomore Justin NeSmith (Wylie, Texas) brought UT Tyler within one, but it proved not to be enough as the Tigers held on for the 3-2 win.
The Patriots will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, when they travel to Searcy, Ark., for a non-conference match-up with Harding. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
