Men’s Soccer Goes the Distance to Tie Mississippi College
September 17, 2009
BULLARD, Texas - The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team opened the American Southwest Conference portion of its 2009 schedule on Thursday night by playing Mississippi College to a 1-1 tie at The Brook Hill School’s Herrington Stadium in Bullard.
In the first half each team struggled to find its offensive footing, with the two sides combining for just six shots and no goals in the opening frame
In the second half, Mississippi’s Michael Cooper broke the scoreless tie on breakaway in the 52nd minute to give the Choctaws (3-1-1, 0-0-1) a 1-0 lead.
With time winding down, the Patriots (0-3-0, 0-0-1) finally found the back of the net in the 70th minute when sophomore Joseph Lokang (Grand Prairie, Texas) tapped in the rebound from senior Tony Guillen’s (Longview, Texas) shot and evened the score at one.
After Lokang’s goal, each team ramped up their offensive production only to have their efforts end in a tie.
UT Tyler goalkeeper Mark Oliphant (Bedford, Texas) made six saves on the day, while his Mississippi counterpart, Andrew Dailey, came up with eight.
The Patriots will resume ASC action on Saturday by hosting Louisiana College at 4 p.m.
