Men’s Soccer Cruises by Louisiana for First Win
September 19, 2009
BULLARD, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2009 season on Saturday by blanking Louisiana College, 7-0, in an American Southwest Conference contest at The Brook Hill School’s Herrington Stadium in Bullard.
UT Tyler (1-3-1, 1-0-1) was met with little opposition from Louisiana in the match, as the Patriots outshot the Wildcats (0-8, 0-2) by a 53 to six margin.
Sophomore Jake Urbaniak (Ft. Worth, Texas) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just two minutes and forty-one seconds into the match with a header off of a corner kick from senior Brad Bullock (Tyler, Texas).
With a deep bench, the Patriots were able to spread around their offense in the contest and were not forced to rely on only one or two players. Six different Patriots scored goals in the match, with freshman Chris Powell (Houston, Texas) being the only UT Tyler player to find the back of the net twice.
Senior Tony Guillen (Longview, Texas), sophomores Jose Reyes (Houston, Texas) and Forest Herndon (San Marcos, Texas) and freshman Collin Clark (Carrollton, Texas) all put their names on the score sheet in the match by recording one goal each.
Junior Mark Oliphant (Bedford, Texas) picked up the ninth solo shutout of his career and first of the season in the match by turning away all five shots that he faced.
UT Tyler will continue ASC play on Friday by traveling to Abilene, Texas to take on Hardin-Simmons at 4 p.m.
