Linfield Opens with 1-0 Win Over Redlands
May 8, 2008

TYLER, Texas – The 4th-ranked defending Division III Softball National Champion Linfield Wildcats (37-4) opened play in the 2008 NCAA Championships with a 1-0 win over No. 7 Redlands (34-11) in eight innings.

The game was scoreless through regulation with Linfield pitcher Brittany Miller (17-1) allowing just six hits. Miller’s counterpart for Redlands, Katie Brnca (18-7) allowed three fewer hits in the extra inning game.

Towards the end of the contest, Branca walked four batters, including an intentional walk to the game’s penultimate batter to load up the bases for the force out at home with one out.

In what was the final at bat of the game, Brnca hit Linfield’s Amanda Attleberger to score the winning run.

With the win Linfield advanced to Thursday’s 4 p.m. game to take on the regional’s top-seed, Louisiana College. The loss moves Redlands to the elimination bracket where they will face the loser of the Texas-Tyler and La Verne matchup on Friday at 10 a.m.
