UT Tyler Eliminates La Verne in Rematch

TYLER, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler softball team eliminated three of the six participating teams on their way to last weekend’s ASC Championship game The Patriots reprised that roll this weekend, as they eliminated LaVerne on Saturday afternoon, 4-2, in the NCAA Division III Tyler Regional.

UT Tyler has now eliminated three of the seven teams in the Tyler Regional. The Patriots took out Redlands and Linfield on Friday and eliminated La Verne, the team that sent them to the Elimination Bracket, on Saturday.

The Patriots did most of their damage in the beginning of the game, scoring two in the first inning and one in the second. UT Tyler added one more in the fourth to wrap up their offense in the game.

In contrast, La Verne did their scoring at the end of the game scoring one run in both the sixth and seventh inning. La Verne had the winning run at the plate in the top of the seventh with the tying run at second base, but could not convert and lost 4-2.

UT Tyler outfielder Carly Collins went 2-for-3 on the day, with one RBI to lead the Patriots. Kristen Akin-Henton was 0-for-1 on the day but scored two runs, as she was hit by La Verne pitcher Jessica McLaughlin twice in the game.

Patriots’ second baseman Lindsey Peters was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while outfielder Julie Smith was 2-for-3.

La Verne’s Melissa Carlson, Trisha McCormick, Lynsey Padilla and Jodi Lindsay each had two hits on the day to combine for eight of the Leopards’ nine hits on the day.

Carlson and McCormick each had a run on the day, while Padilla had a RBI.

Pitcher Kelsey Harrington of UT Tyler went 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs with four strikeouts to advance to 17-2 on the year. Lauren Scruggs entered to get the final out of the game for the Patriots and earned her first save of the year in the process.

The win advances UT Tyler to the 3:45 game on Saturday where they will meet Mary Hardin-Baylor for the right to face Louisiana College in Sunday’s 12 p.m. Regional Championship game.
