The University of Texas at Tyler Student-Athlete Advisory Committee By-Laws
Article 1 – Name
The name of this organization shall be The University of Texas at Tyler Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (UT Tyler SAAC).
Article II – Purpose
The purposes of the UT Tyler SAAC shall be:
To promote communication between student-athletes and the University administration and conference office.- To encourage involvement of student-athletes in campus and community projects.
- To provide programs for student-athletes to encourage academic achievement, health promotion, social responsibility and general awareness.
- To increase awareness on campus of athletics events.
- To facilitate better communication between athletics teams.
- To promote the voice of student-athletes with respect to NCAA, conference and University policies.
Article III – Membership
Membership shall consist of two representatives (one junior or senior, and one freshman or sophomore) from each of the men and women’s athletics teams.
The team’s head coach shall select the representatives.
- The term of membership shall be for two years.
- All members shall be full-time student-athletes.
- All student-athletes must be academically and athletically eligible to serve on the UT Tyler SAAC.
- This organization shall not discriminate in the selection of members on the basis of sexual orientation, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or disability.
Article IV – Officers
The president, president-elect, secretary/treasurer and immediate past-president shall constitute the executive board of the UT Tyler SAAC.
- The UT Tyler SAAC shall elect a president-elect and a secretary/treasurer from the members of the SAAC appointed by the head coaches. At the end of his or her term, the president-elect shall become president.
- The term of office shall be one year, and no person may hold more than one office at the same time.
- Elections for the officers shall be held at the first meeting of the new school year.
- The duties of the officers shall be:
- President – To preside over meetings, to serve as the official representative of the organization, to communicate with the advisor, to appoint committee chairs, and any other duties necessary for conducting the business of the organization.
- President-Elect – To assist the president in carrying out his or her duties, and in the absence of the president, to carry out those duties.
- Secretary/Treasurer – To take and maintain the minutes of the organization’s meetings, to carry out the correspondence of the organization, to distribute necessary information to the organization and student body, and to maintain the financial records of the organization.
Article V – Meetings
- Meetings shall be held monthly during the academic year. The president with the approval of the advisor may call other meetings.
- Fifty-percent of the members of the organization shall constitute a quorum.
- After one unexcused absence from a regularly scheduled meeting, the secretary/treasurer will send a letter to the member and his or her head coach reminding them of the attendance policy of the UT Tyler SAAC. After two unexcused absences, the president shall ask the coach to select a replacement for the absent member.
Article VI – Advisor
The Athletics Director shall appoint an advisor to the UT Tyler SAAC annually. The advisor must attend all meetings of the organization.
Article VII – Parliamentary Authority
To all cases in which they are applicable and not inconsistent with these by-laws or any special rules of order the organization may from time to time adopt, Roberts’ Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern this organization and its meetings.
Article VIII – Amendments
Amendments to this constitution and by-laws may occur upon the consent of three-fourths of the entire membership. Amendments must be presented in writing one meeting prior to their being considered.
